The objective of this analysis was to evaluate a seal to determine why is was leaking and then redesign to prevent the leaking. The component is cylindrical and the loading condition is a radial deflection, therefore a 180 degree model with symmetry is required. The lower outer diameter is restrained in all directions and the upper edge is restrained in the axial ("X") direction while being translated in the radial direction ("Z"). The "Y" constraint is provided by the plane of symmetry. The material model used for this analysis was a Rivlin model with C10, C01, and C 11 specified.

The analysis was performed in 5 load steps.

The resulting deformed plot (see animation file below) shows the wrinkling and buckling of the rubber seal. The results also provided the force distribution along the lower restrained edge which highlighted the same region where the seal was leaking. Note that the region near the 90 degree position is folding and pulling on the attachment surface. Therefore when the re-designed seal was evaluated using MARC and the force distribution along the lower restrained edge was significantly reduced, there was confidence that the analysis was correct and the solution would function as required.

The following video shows results from the analysis.
